Honey Kalaria |
Dancer, choreographer, model, singer, actress and now a Doctor of Arts, Honey Kalaria is known as the UK's Bollywood Ambassador. Honey's Dance Academy, specialising in teaching Bollywood dancing, has been running for seven years and now boasts fourteen centres across Greater London, with over 1,500 students. Honey and her students have Performed both in the UK and Europe in front of Royalty, and alongside Bollywood heart-throbs such as Hrithik Roshan and Shah Rukh Khan. Honey's Dance Academy is known for turning out future stars for the silver screen. Bollywood and European directors frequently approach the Academy, looking for dancers and extras to appear in Blockbuster films and mainstream pop videos. Bollywood, Bhangra, Kathak and Acting classes at Honey's Dance Academy are now recognised as modules for the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh Awards, a voluntary, non-competitive and flexible programme of cultural and adventurous activities for young people aged 14-25. In October this year, students from Honey's Dance Academy dazzled HRH Prince Edward, The Earl of Wessex, at the Duke of Edinburgh Award's 'Reaching Out' Arts Initiative Presentation Gala Evening in London. The students were presented with Award certificates by the Earl of Wessex himself before performing what was referred to as a show stopping Bollywood dance routine choreographed by teachers from Honey's Dance Academy. Honey and her top dancers also attended this year's Mega Mela in Birmingham, where they performed along side Bollywood heart throbs such as Hrithik Roshan. Honey herself ended up being mobbed at one stage, with the public clamouring for autographs and photographs. Bodyguards had to be called in to protect her. As well as dazzling audiences with their Eastern glamour on the stage, Honey and her dancers also represented Ford cars and their 'Bollywood Dreams' campaign. The Chairman of Ford gained Honey's permission to screen her chart topping Bollywood Workout video on their in car visual systems at the show, and congratulated Honey in person on her performance. November was a particularly special month for Honey, as she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from the University of East London. The title was given to her in recognition of her services to the arts as a leading exponent and teacher of modern Indian dance, her inspirational role in the community and as a cultural ambassador for East London. She celebrated the occasion with top journalists in Mayfair, London, and Bollywood Star, Sunil Shetty, was there to offer his congratulations. Towards the end of last month, Honey and her dancers were invited as VIP guests and main performers to the annual fund raising ball for the Surya Foundation, who work closely with Diabetes UK. As Honey is a patron of Diabetes UK, this event was especially important to her. The evening raised over £21'000 to support Diabetes projects in the South Asian Community. In store for 2005 is our spectacular Pit & The Poppadom Musical (those of you that wish to take part in it can contact our Head Office for further details, the 2005 Talent Shows in April and of course our Wales Residential workshop week commencing 14th August 2005.
